In this workshop you will get a chance to carve fine details into a smooth surface, through the process of inscribing letters into a block of limestone.
Inscribing letters in stone is an ancient craft unto itself, however in Chris Pellettieri’s system of training stone carvers, it is learned as a pathway to discovering the methods of using a small hammer and chisel to define sharp details on the surface of a piece of stone.
Chris Pellettieri was trained in an apprenticeship program at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City in 1989. Following the apprenticeship, he ran a successful business doing commissions for individuals and institutions public and private. In 2015, he started the Pellettieri Stone Carvers’ Academy to promote the activity of stone carving and to provide training in its’ ancient traditional methods. There have been three training programs to date: one for teenagers on summer break (six weeks), one for sculptors aspiring to carve their art in stone (also six weeks) and currently we are running the first four-month, full-time, paid apprenticeship for veterans.
