IT’S A WRAP! What an amazing weekend that was. Thank you all for coming. And special thanks to our partners, sponsors, and all the amazing craftsmen that shared their passion and knowledge with us. See you in 2019!

Highlight: Workshop Make your own Shaun the Sheep clay model

We’re happy to have had a NYC premiere! For the first time in New York you could make your own Shaun the Sheep with no one other than Jim Parkyn. We’ve teamed up with Aardman, the British creators behind Shaun the Sheep, Wallace & Gromit and Morph to offer you some ewe-nique workshops and the opportunity to learn from an Aardman expert model maker how to make your own Shaun the Sheep clay model.

Highlight: Premiere Still Life | Ron Mueck at Work

Ron Mueck, a secretive artist, rarely welcomes visitors, and a meeting with him leaves an impression. At regular intervals over a period of two years, Gautier Deblonde filmed the artist as he created three works. Seeing Ron Mueck at work intrigues, impresses, surprises. His sculptures depict men and women whose expressions are familiar to us. Expressions of everyday life: a troubling realism at the service of a profoundly moving art.

Highlight: Workshop Calligraffiti

Amsterdam based artist Daan Wille, aka Blazin, has specialized in calligraffiti, a combination of calligraphy and graffiti. With the famous graffiti writer Shoe as his source of inspiration, Wille is by now an all-round graphic designer, with a passion for calligraffiti. In this workshop you were able to learn how to make your own piece of art with your name written on it.

Highlight: Star Wars Origami

Paper folding projects from a galaxy far, far away.. At the Craft In Focus Festival you could create your own Yoda, Boba Fett Helmet or Light Saber and learn from origami master Chris Alexander.  At the Craft In Focus Festival you could join his workshop and create your own galaxy. Just remember: may the folds be with you!

Testimonial Marina Ruiz Molina - paper conservator Metropolitan Museum of Art

As an art conservator I care deeply for the materiality of beautiful things and for the intergenerational transmission of the wisdom to make them. The Craft in Focus Festival is a paradise for people like me who believe in the importance of the tangible in the era of the cybernated. The amount of creativity and knowledge that the Festival brings together is truly inspirational.”

“I participated in the Amsterdam Festival in 2015, when I lectured on the influence of traditional papermaking in the artist’s choice (taking examples from the drawings and prints collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art). I remember it as one of the most relevant, exciting, and fun events I have had the privilege of being part of. The organization was flawless, and Wendy’s team was efficient and warm.  I left Amsterdam feeling that I had made a mark in people’s perception of the ancient, disappearing craft of papermaking and its significance in the world’s artistic legacy.”
